ITEM- Vintage Gerald Crawford Dollhouse Miniature Walnut Working Music Box 1:12 Scale. DESCRIPTION- Vintage (probably 1980's) Signed Gerald Crawford working music box that can also be used as a gorgeous Chinese Chippendale side table. The lid is held in with pins on each side & opens to reveal a music box with a Swiss movement by REUGE. I don't know the tune it plays, but it is not "The Skater's Waltz" or "Somewhere My Love" which are tunes found in this same style music box by Crawford.
There is a knob/key on the bottom that when turned will wind it up & this can be folded down when not in use. This music box inside was, I believe, the second smallest production movement REUGE made. There is a small round knob/button on the bottom which has to be pulled carefully up to make it play briefly & pushed in to turn it off or you can let it play down & just wind it to play without pushing the button/knob in. It is signed on the back "G Crawford" (the G is a bit faint). This is darker than these flash photos show. The sixth photo is the closest but it's even darker than that, a wonderful aged dark patinated walnut. He was also a master carver. If you have seen one of his Winterthur clocks he made, you will know he was an absolute master craftsman who was capable of making miniature masterpieces.
MEASUREMENTS- 2" tall X 1 & 3/4" wide X 1 & 3/8 deep. CONDITION- Excellent vintage condition with no damage. IMPORTANT NOTE- Pulling the start knob on the bottom of this is not easy & should be done with a pair of thin tipped tweezers (I use special micro tipped ones).
Though this piece is in perfect shape currently, I have seen others at shows which have the fretwork trim broken or even a leg broken off from people trying to wind it or pull up this knob carelessly, sometimes even carefully trying with long fingernails. Its just how it was designed. Please be aware of this & that there will be no return if this happens later as I have included this warning & it's fine now.
If you're careful, it won't happen, as it never has to me when I've turned it off & on & I've had 4 of these over the years. Most of these have damage to the trim or legs, often having parts of either broken off in the attempt to wind this or turn it on as that isn't easy due to the small size. Our previous 21 years experience with antiques enables us to have a discerning eye when it comes to proper scale in miniatures. We hope you will choose to do business with us.
