Late victorian Swiss Cylinder Music Box. This fabulous example by the master craftsman Nicole Freres who is considered by many to be one of THE best Swiss music box makers of the period, and any Working examples of his boxes are much sought after and rightly considered by some to be the pinacle of the craft. This recently serviced late Victorian example is in first class working order mechanically and is still complete with zither attachment.
Please take a look at the pictures, and note the box is in good condition too for its age, Sumptuously veneered in finest walnut and banded with tulipwood with no issues of note beyond a little drift apart at the center top veneer as pictured. Comes with working lock and key. Good Working examples of these types of'Grand-Format' box's are becoming very rare these days, and coupled with a longer repertoire of music, the choice of airs from a wide selection of styles proves very popular with the discerning collector. Cylinder length is 20 inch as pictured. The mechanism serial number is 50617. This fine example was imported and retailed originally by Imhof and Mukle, distinguished Retailers to her majesty the queen, and situated on Oxford Street in London. It measures over 38" inches long on the main box section but over 40" when including the black base , 13" wide box but over 15.1/2 inches wide when including the black base it stands 10" inches high with the lid closed so quite a magnificent example of the craft.
