Rare Zdenka Magic Decapitation Automaton

  

This is hand crafted, being made from parts taken from antique dolls including rare doll bodies, which are individually dressed in a unique & charming costume. One of the features of Zedenka Automatons is that no two pieces are exactly the same, they vary by using different features & colours which give a bespoke appearance to each piece. This model is called the Magic Decapitation Automaton, & when this is seen performing its trick, the reason for the name given soon becomes clear! While the performance is taking place, two aires are played from the internal musical box, the first being Dr Zhivago Laras theme, followed by the second one which is Edelweiss.

This is a lovely example of one of the few made, and is in very good condition & works as it should. The costume detail on the figure is amazing, the doll is wearing a frilled cravat coming off a beige waist coat with three brass buttons, which is underneath a black velvet jacket having matching beige frilled edge lapels, showing five sequins on each jacket lapel. He appears to be wearing beige coloured breeches with a rope belt which has a pink & green floral leaf pattern, with gold link chain patterned edging at the bottom of the breech legs. Colonial style pumps are seen on his feet with fancy rope edging around the tops of them.

The base & doll housing are constructed of wood, with red velvet covering & gold braided square patterned edging to the base. The tree on the left side has a bird on the top which rotates as his trick is performed. A head appears out of the dice pattern box on the table which has round red drapes around the base of it.

Both the heads on the doll & the one which rises out of the box appear to be bisque & have good detail of facial features, which include eye brows & eye lashes along with a good head of hair. The dimensions of the piece are 20cm wide x 28cm long x 43cm high.

The actual height of the doll itself in the black velvet enclosure is 20cm. As time goes on, this will only appreciate in value, as they become scarce.
