A rare and unusual Musical Cigarette Box, which I believe was made in Japan in the early to mid-20th century. The music box (windup) plays a tune that I don't recognise. There are two lightbulbs inside (one coated red and other is green).
They are connected to the battery draw by a maze of unsheathed wires within. I believe the original action was that, when the lid was opened, a sliding pin within sprang up near the hinge point and released something jamming the movement of the music barrel. When the music box was activated, a moving arm on the side of the music box mechanism barrel rocked a thin plywood shelf in the middle, whilst simultaneously activating the lights. This rocking I would expect to have moved the cigarettes within up and down, row by row, whilst playing the tune. I believe this can be fixed, since all the parts seem to be there, it's just a matter of aligning the mechanisms within and possibly changing the bulbs - I didn't want to damage it further trying to repair it myself. The copper/brass ashtray has a crack in the corner and some damage. The light shining through the box in the photos is torch light to show the opaque backing in main-box and battery box. Approximately 16 cm tall x 21 cm wide x 11 cm deep (maximum dimensions).
