Large Italian Jewelry Music Box With Inlaid Wood & Swiss Reuge Movement Floral

  
This is a nice sized Italian wood music box for jewelry or small keepsakes. It has a beautiful lacquered finish over the inlaid wood and has been well kept over the years. It's been in my parents' possession for some time, though I'm not 100% sure when it was produced. This would have been brought home from a trip to Italy. The size is pretty good for a lacquer box, roughly 17"x7" overall exterior.

It has a cute little "Love Story" song that plays when opened, the movement and switch work perfectly. Condition-wise, it has some light wear around the feet, some cracks on the bottom veneer and one in the front face which isn't super obvious.

I do not have a key for it readily available. The history of the music box traces back to late 18th-century Europe, with Swiss watchmaker Antoine Favre-Salomon playing a pivotal role in its development. In 1796, Salomon invented a mechanism that used a pinned cylinder to pluck the teeth of a steel comb, creating a melody-this innovation laid the foundation for the modern music box. This simple, yet ingenious movement became the heart of music boxes, allowing them to produce beautiful, intricate tunes. Originating in Switzerland, these devices quickly gained popularity across Europe, particularly in Germany and France, where they evolved into elaborately crafted pieces of art, cherished for their craftsmanship and melodious charm.
