Karlheinz Stockhausen Zodiac Music Box Aquarius Reuge Sainte-Croix Switzerland

  
This is a Karlheinz Stockhausen music box for the zodiac sign of Aquarius, Bearer of Water (January 21st to February 19th). Stockhausen composed a melody for each of the twelve signs of the zodiac, each melody being specially composed for music boxes. The first series of Stockhausen music boxes was manufactured in 1974; the second was manufactured in 1998; the third and probably final series was manufactured in 2005.

The boxes of all three series were made by the Reuge Music Box Company in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland. This box is from the third series.

The melody is encased in a light-coloured natural wooden box measuring 17.7 by 12.1 by 8 cm. The notes of the Zodiac melody for Aquarius - handwritten and signed by the composer - have been silk-screen printed onto the lid of the box. Although described as used, the music box has only been taken out to be played on a few occasions; the rest of the time it has been stored safely in its original packaging.
