- Black Forest, Heavily Carved Woden Compote/music Box Combination, Works Well

  

Here's an unusual Black Forest wooden compote/music box combination that I've had for many years and that I'd estimate is from the'20's or'30's. A very unusual piece, oval in shape, 3-1/2 x 11 x 7. The upper bowl is reticulated and heavily carved with grapes and leaves It has branch handles at each end. On the underside of the bowl, neck and foot, the carving continues, but it's more in lines angles and semi-geometric shapes.

The wood is very dark and is in flawless condition. There are 4 peg feet which elevate the piece enough for the winding and shutoff mechanisms. The shutoff pin doesn't seen to work and the music plays continuously until it runs down. Tenor and tone are perfect and comfortably loud.

One is Ach die lieber Augustine and another I don't know, repetitively until it runs down. Playing time is excellent at between 3 and 4 minutes. Maker of the music box is unknown as I didn't want to disassemble it.
