Extremely Rare Victorian Sewing Basket with Music Box. Sewing Baskets music box says it plays "Sing me to sleep". However, the winding key is missing, but should be easy to replace. The music box is not guaranteed to work since I cant find the winding key. Sewing Box is in original condition.

No repairs have been made or attempted. Every metal, wooden, satin and paper seal is original. Hexagonal shaped box is 11" L x 6" H x 7 Deep. Wood appears to be a Mahogany rattan/wicker as well as a mix of some hand-braided, soft wood or other soft, natural, wooden material. Colors of the wood vary from light, medium and darker tans and browns along with some beautiful cherry colored wood weaved through as well. The inner satin lining is a vivid magenta pink.

Bright, beautiful pink color considering its age! The bottom is a flat piece of wood with No. 43 (or 403) written in pencil in very elaborate penmanship. The bottom also has the place with a metal wind shaft that has a square head- so I believe it need a square winder key to wind the music box.

There is a paper seal that says "Sing Me to Sleep" written in cursive - which indicates what song the music box plays. In the far right corner there is another paper seal that says 4/3501/3/7 Germany, K.

The last 2 numbers in that sequence are written as three-sevenths. Entire box is in pretty good condition, considering age. The satin lining is slightly shredded and faded in a few places around the lid's upper boarder, but the larger area of the lid and the entire lining inside the base is in almost perfect condition. The tufted parts are all still strongly attached.

The front center closure area appears to be missing an original closure clasp or lock as it appears something was once there, but now isnt. Hinges - Both are present, but the right hinge is not secured - it is, however, finely connected to the base, but the top seems to have unraveled and has lost the connection when doing so. Could be repaired, but I will leave that up to the new owner to keep in original condition. The original braided cords inside that are supposed to hold the lid open when it is raised are both severed.

However, they are still very firmly affixed to the lid and base of the sewing box and so they could easily be repaired. The wood is in great condition. Minimal damage, still very strong and has no musty/moldy/rotten smells or pieces. The box is a little fragile, as it is almost 150 years old, but can be handled just fine using normal care.

The cherry colored handle is in excellent condition. It is securely fastened with the original metal fasteners. The History behind the original owner.

Elizabeth Wenz-Schad supposedly obtained this basket as a wedding gift from a German relative in 1874. Included inside basket will be a paper with a piece of the original owners family history.

As the wife of a taylor, this box was used quite often. 2 straight pins that were found tucked deep inside the lining. They may have also belonged to Mrs.

Schad as they look very old. The item "1870s Wooden Sewing Basket with Music Box Pink Satin Lining Handmade In Germany" is in sale since Sunday, May 2, 2021.
