Here we have a really. Footed dark red lacquer Oriental jewelry box or chest with a drawer!

There is a wind up key on the bottom for the music that is marked Sanyo. The "gold" metal may be brass because a magnet will not stick to it, I. When the box is open there is a 2 compartment tray inside with a form for a watch on the left side and 2 forms for 2 rings and a split area for more on the right side. There is one large compartment below that and a large mirror back inside the lid.

There is bright red velvet inside and even framing the mirror in the lid. It has a FANTASTIC BRASS lock in the shape of a heavy fish and the back plate (and fish) is FABULOUS being so ORNATE and DETAILED with ENGRAVING! REALLY UNIQUE way to open the lock! Here is how it opens: t here is a "U" shaped piece in the head on the side that you pull out with your fingernail and it slides out! Please see last 2 photos for it.

The inlaid Abalone or Mother of Pearl is raised and is just GORGEOUS with turtles on the lid and cattails and all kinds of flowers and there are two lines all around bordering it. The front has 2 crabs - one on each side with some kind of vegetation and the bottom drawer has 2 ducks on each side and UNIQUE flowers too. The front and the lid are decorated and the sides of the box are plain. It plays lovely Oriental music when you open the bottom drawer. It measures 5 7/8" tall, 9 3/8" wide and 6 1/2 deep.

PLEASE NOTE: The color is a DARK RED although it looks like a bright red. It was very difficult to photograph.

It is in great condition with no cracks. Few tiny chips on the foot underside which rests on the counter and which cannot be seen when box is in place.

Few light scratches and a small area on the side of the box that is raised and that were done when made, I couldn't even photograph it. Inside the mirror is in great condition and the red velvet has a 2 long thin glue mark in the inside at the back (done when made) and it is very difficult to see also a little bit of discoloration. The top drawer for watch and rings is fine.

Bottom drawer has a few dots of discoloration but also not bad too. Ny white marks showing in the photos are from camera flash.
